Using NFC Tags on Metal Surfaces
Standard NFC tags generally do not function properly when placed directly on metal surfaces. The metal interferes with the signal, preventing the tag from being read. To use NFC tags on metal, you have two options:
- Create a gap - Leave at least 0.5 cm of space between the NFC tag and the metal surface.
- Use on-metal NFC tags - These are specially designed with a ferrite barrier layer between the chip and the adhesive, allowing them to work effectively on metal.
"On-metal" NFC tags are versatile because they can be used on both metal and non-metal surfaces. However, they typically have a slightly shorter scan range compared to standard NFC tags. For most applications where tags will not be attached to metal, standard NFC tags are the better choice due to their longer read distance and lower cost.
